Welcome to My Internship Journey

Hi! Welcome to my first blog post in COM210. I’m going to be talking about what my topic is, why I selected it and all of that fun stuff.

The topic that I’m choosing is following my professional development within my internship this semester. I am currently a graphic design intern at College Hill Custom Threads so this project will be following my professional journey throughout this process! I will be showcasing my design skills through the projects that we are doing as well as creating a digital and physical portfolio.

There is going to be one main way that I will collect my evidence throughout this semester, and that is me! Since this topic is based around me, it is important that I am the one gathering the primary evidence. Which that will be raw photos, videos, audio, and Adobe files. For the photos, videos, and audio, I will be recording/taking them first hand to get a more personalized experience for my topic. For the files that I will be uploading, that will be my own personal work as well.

A couple examples that I have for projects this semester is, for the first project- which is a graphic design project. I will be creating a poster that is showcasing one of my favorite parts of WSU. For the second project, I will be creating a logo that will eventually go on my business cards. For the third project, which is an audio story, I will interview a couple people that already have been through this internship and how their process was. And finally for the last project I will be doing a video tutorial on Adobe.

Inspration File

This is the first link I have from my inspiration file, I love the style and the way some of these business cards are designed! There’s so much you can do!

This second link is one of my favorite resources when it comes to graphic design! There is a plethora of articles, videos and pictures when it comes to all things creative!

https://www.pantone.com/color-intelligence/articles/colors/new-native

When it comes to graphic design or just design in general, color is so extremely important! I like to keep up with Pantone quite frequently since they are the standard of color thoughout the design world.

And that is wrapping up my first blog post! Looking forward to the rest of the semester!

Reflection Blog Post

Throughout this semester of COM210, one of my favorite projects that I have done this semester was my final video project. I have previously worked with Adobe programs in the past such as Photoshop, illustrator, and InDesign but I have never worked with Premire- so this has been really fun for me to learn how to use a program that I have never used before.

I have learned a multitude of skills throughout this course, but some of the main skills that I have learned is to how to use some of the Blogging Best Practices and how to successfully write a thourough blog post that can sussessfully get my point across and correctly articulate myself online. I think i’ll be able to use this in the future because I believe that the world is becoming more technology based.

I think I am going to go to the career path of a graphic designer after my internship this semester. Honestly all of the projects that we have done using Adobe will help because we use Adobe products day-to-day in that career field, for all kinds of different projects.

I think it would be a cool skill to learn to know how to possibly code a website, I do think this might be too extensive to learn in just a unit, but I would be interested in learning about that. I also found that youtube was really helpful in learning how to use the products and tips and tricks how to use them.

All in all, I am very happy with the choice to take this class this semester. I have already reccomended it to a couple girls in my sorority since I think it doesn’t hurt for people of any major to learn the skills in this course as well as learn how to use the Adobe products that we’ve been using.

Final Video Story

I decided to create for this project was a tutorial on how to hem dress pants. My course topic is an internship at an apparel company. Working in the fashion industry it is so important to know all aspects of the industry, and that includes knowing simple sewing techniques such as hemming pants.  I looked on many different websites and how-to videos relating to apparel and non-apparel topics.

The design process that I had from beginning to end was, first creating a topic idea that I thought would best fit my course project. Next, I went to shoot the film I needed. After I gathered all the media, I then created a storyboard on how I wanted my draft to look. From there I went into Premire and put all the clips together and trimmed and edited the audio as needed. I also added on a title and credit slide. I recorded all clips on my phone then uploaded them onto my computer.

Some of the feedback that I got on my draft video story are to mute the background audio on some of the clips since there is some distracting background noice. Also to add in transitions between the clips to make the change of clips more seamless. I also added in some voiceovers to explain what is going on in the clips.

Using Premire was honestly pretty hard for me since I’ve never used it before. It took me a lot longer than expected since I had to learn a totally new software than the other projects which we have used software that I am very comfortable with.  All materials in this project are my own.

The advice that I have to people using Premire is to be patient in learning it since it can get a little confusing, but once you learn all the basic tools it is not hard to get down! Final Audio Story

What I decided to create for this project is an interview with a previous Intern from College Hill Custom Threads. This project relates to my course topic because since my project is about my experience as an intern for the same company, I thought it would be a great idea to interview someone who also has been through the same internship that I have. The design influences that mainly inspired me was a typical interview set up. Wheras I asked questions and they answered. I watched a couple interviews on youtube to really get a feel on how to word my questions to get the best possible answers out of them. My design process was  creating some thoughtful questions, finding my subject, Macy to interview. Then I  got my audio clips and uploaded them in to Audition. I collected all the elements myself through voice recordings of macy and I. The process for constructing my project was uploading the files in Audition and trimming and putting multiple files together. I mainly used the trim tool in this process to cut out filler words such as “um” and long pauses. I didn’t really find any technical challenges throughout this project. It was mainly just me learning how to use this software since I’ve never used it before. All my materials are my own.

From the feedback I got I made a couple adjustments. Some of the feedback I got was to fine tune a little more of the filler words and long pauses which I did pretty easily on Audition. Another piece of feedback that I got was to add a conclusion to the end. Which I did consider but I would have went over on the time limit if I did, and I would have to cut a huge part of the interview out and I thought I did a great job covering what the project was about in the intro. So all in all I just made minor sound adjustments to the audio story. Again, all of the audio is my own.

Final Logo Project

final-logo-project

To start out creating this logo design,  I wanted something that symbolizes me- which is my name but I also wanted to add a fun graphic twist to it as well, which is why I added the lighting bolt. The research that I did to find my design and ideas were looking on Pinterest at a bunch of personal logos and just sketching how they would look with my name, I also looked at different logo websites to draw inspiration from as well. I have two main parts of my logo, one my name and the other the lighting bolt. My name obvisouly represents me and my brand, and the lighting bolt represents boldness and energy which I think are great discriptors that align with me as a person. When I was actually creating this logo, I started by first getting inspiration and sketching with my name in it, then taking different elements from different designs that I really liked then morphed them into one. After sketching and finding a design I actually liked. I used Adobe capture on my phone to upload it onto illustrator. From there, I traced the image with the pen tool and filled it in. I then made minor adjustments to the logo as needed.

Some suggestions that I got was to adjust “designs” so it could have some more breathing room under the lighting bolt. I also got the suggestion to move the letters in my name a little closer to each other- I did adjust both of those! Since I am really happy with the way my logo turned out, I didn’t want to adjust it too much so I created two alternative logos that I can also use!

Again, all images and ideas are from myself.
